In the shadow of Kilimanjaro, in the Moshi and Hai districts at the heart of Tanzania's coffee country, this coffee is grown on the Africa Plantation Kilimanjaro (APK) estate. It is a project with a distinctive soul: run by a family with deep Colombian roots under the direction of Alejandro Galante, it brings together Tanzanian land and South American coffee-growing expertise. Fittingly, this coffee is called Tumaini, which means "hope" in Kiswahili.
The estate brings together seven farms on land held under long-term leases from six rural cooperatives, which own the land and make up most of its workforce. On volcanic soils between 980 and 1,400 metres, the Arabica is largely shade-grown (84% of the plantings), alongside rotating food crops such as maize, beans, hemp and sunflower. This follows the principles of regenerative agriculture, which stabilises the soil, water balance and biodiversity and provides employment for local communities. This commitment is recognised by Rainforest Alliance certification.
Harvesting is done by hand from mid-March to December. Fully washed processing takes place in semi-submerged channels that cut water use by 85% compared with the traditional method. Drying is half in the sun and half mechanical, in a temperature-controlled silo. The result is a clean, balanced cup.
In the cup, it stands out for its chocolatey body, bright sweetness and fine acidity, with notes of berries and subtle hints of tobacco that add to its complexity, leading to a smooth, rounded finish.
Majer's Tanzania Tumaini Coffee is a Rainforest Alliance certified washed Arabica from the APK estate in the Kilimanjaro region. Fully washed processing and high-altitude cultivation give it an elegant profile, with a milk chocolate body, bright sweetness, fine acidity and notes of berries and tobacco.
