Jinotega and Matagalpa are the green heart of Nicaragua, in the mountains of the country's north-central region, about 160 km from the capital, Managua. The two towns lie in a valley surrounded by high mountains, a setting that favours sun-drying the coffee. Jinotega alone produces 80% of the country's coffee. Overlooking Lake Apanás, it is known as "La Ciudad de las Brumas", the City of Mists, for the magnificent swirls of cloud that constantly drift over the valley.
This coffee comes from Maragogype, a truly unusual variety: a natural mutation of Typica, recognisable by its huge leaves, large cherries and, above all, its giant beans, which have earned it the nickname "elephant bean". The plant bears less fruit than ordinary coffee, and precisely for this reason its flavour is more concentrated and expressive. The Screen 19+ selection guarantees the largest bean size, the most distinctive trait of this variety.
Grown above 1,000 metres on volcanic soils, in the shade of inga, banana and native trees, with around 2,500 mm of rainfall a year and an average temperature of 20 °C, this coffee is hand-picked between December and March, over several successive passes. After fermentation and sun-drying, the beans are sorted by hand.
In the cup, it shows a pronounced fragrance and an intense aroma, with notes of almond, medium acidity and a finish of hazelnut, berries and caramel: a full, smooth and enveloping profile.
Majer's Nicaragua Maragogype Screen 19+ Coffee is a washed Arabica of the Maragogype variety from the departments of Jinotega and Matagalpa. The large bean size and high-altitude cultivation give it a full, concentrated flavour, with notes of almond, hazelnut, berries and caramel, and medium acidity.
